"I've had surgery/health problems in the past, can you still train me?"

Yes you can still train dependant on the type and extent of your injury or health problems. Some conditions or injuries may require a GP’s referral or clearance letter, a full rehabilitation programme can be set up covering all aspects of your requirements from Range of Motion (ROM), resistance, Functional and strength type exercises

"I'm worried that injuries I have had may affect my ability to train; so what's the point?"

The point is if you don’t seek medical or fitness  advice your injuries may get worse and dependant on what they are may result in the muscle or joints wasting away through no exercise and bad diet. The point is that exercise to begin with should be little and often and this will help boost your confidence and help you understand what your body can do and how it does work best. In time you will build up your programme to a level where you can maintain your fitness level through a varied and fun type programme.

"I've never trained or been to the gym before; can I still have a PT?"

Yes whether you have or haven't trained before, A personal trainer can and will come to your house, office, local park and train you at a time to suit your needs. Your chosen PT may be a freelancer and may not be able to use your gym owing to club rules etc, however most PT’s have agreements with local gyms. If not don’t worry a Personal trainer will have equipment and programmes that will get you fit, even without going to the gym.

What’s so good about swimming?

Swimming is one of the few sports that actually work’s your whole body at once, both by enhancing your cardiovascular system whilst toning your whole body at the same time. The other good point is that swimming is weightless there is no direct or indirect impact on your joints, although there is approximately 25lbs of pressure on your body the whole time in the pool. So swimming makes your heart stronger and helps you tone muscle and lose weight.

Can swimming help injuries?

Yes, dependant on which type of injury it is, but most GP’s and Physiotherapists

will suggest some form aqua based training to help you get back to full recovery quicker.

My child needs to learn what should I look for?

All children should learn to swim from an early age or at least get water experience. In a swim school you should check that all the Instructors are properly qualified, some schools will use trainees (unqualified helpers) to take classes so they can have more kids in their school. The school should have Liability Insurance and a development programme in line with the National Swimming Guidelines. The school should be registered with a governing body such as Institute of Swimming, Scottish Amateur Swimming Association.

All schools are different but I would recommend one where the instructor is in the water with the kids, and the ratio should not exceed 1:6 at any time. If you go to a school you should be able to sit and watch the whole lesson, if you are given a reason such as it distracts the children if the parents are present, I would suggest moving school or standing your ground.

What’s different about The Swim Academy?

All our Instructors are qualified and all have a vast knowledge base and experience, the instructors have been or still are Coaches with Livingston District Dolphins or Team T.O.D (Triathlon or Duathlon), all instructors are in the pool with you whether it be children or adults, anyone is welcome to sit and watch how we conduct our lessons. We also cater for parent and toddler groups and kids and adults with learning difficulties or disabilities. The pool is a great teaching pool as it is warm, and has both shallow and deep end unlike some leisure pools.

Can you improve my stroke?

Yes, we currently run, stroke clinics where we will asses your technique and give you drills, pointers and programmes to improve. You can have a one off assessment or attend the clinics every week.
